A.P. INDY 1989 by Seatle Slew - Weekend Surprise by Secretariat
- Henri Jooste 2010
Bred by Will Farish and W.S. Kilroy AP. Indy boasted a mouthwatering pedigree when he walked into the sale ring as a yearling. The product of a champion race horse and sire out of an impeccably bred dam and graded stakes winner A.P. Indy fetched $2.9 million at the 1990 Keeneland July Yearling Sale, making him the highest priced yearling of his year. A.P. Indy had classic connections coursing through his blood. His sire Seattle Slew was a Triple Crown winner and his dam sire was the legendary Secretariat also a Triple Crown winner. A.P. Indy was also a half brother to Summer Squall winner of the Preaknesss Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown.
As a 2 year old A.P. Indy lived up to his exalted pedigree winning three of four starts including the Breeders' Cup Classic GR1 . At three years A.P. Indy fulfilled his classic potential winning five of seven starts . He victories included the Santa Anita Derby GR1, the San Rafael Stakes GR2, Peter Pan Stakes GR2, Holiwood Futurity and the Belmont Stakes. He also ran third against older horses in the Jockey Club Gold Cup GR1 A.P. Indy did not contest the Kentucky Derby due to lameness. He retired as a winner of eight of his eleven lifetime starts. A.P. Indy was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2000.
Retired to stud A.P Indy immediately passed on his racing prowess and genetics. From a fisrt foal crop of only 45 A.P Indy bred 13 stakes winners of which four were stakes winning two year olds. That first foal crop contained two Group One winners, Tomisues Delight and Runup The Colors. Today A.P. Indy is recognized as one of the world's great sires. To the end of June 2010 A.P. Indy has sired 132 stakes winners of which 80 are graded stakes winners and 25 are Group One winners.
A.P Indy has, like his sire Seattle Slew struck up an affinity with mares from the Mr Prospector sire line. Both Seattle Slew and Mr Prospector trace tail female to Myrtlewood, a factor which may explain the potency of this combination. Products of this "cross" include Group One winners Bernardini, Pulpit and Tempera. A.P. Indy has no strains of Northern Dancer is his pedigree, when bred to mares by Northern Dancer line stallions he has had numerous stakes winners, the most successful of which must be the brilliant filly Rags To Riches, winner of the Belmont Stakes (GR1) defeating the colts, as well as conquering her own sex in winning the Kentucky Oaks (GR1).
A.P. Indy has graduated to the next level and is today recognized as a sire of sires. His sire sons include Pulpit, Mineshaft, Malibu Moon and Steven Got Even. Bernardini has recorded his first juvenile winner when his daughter A.Z Warrior sped home in a juvenile event at Holywood Park on July 15. Sire sons bred on the A.P. Indy cross include Pulpit , Mineshaft and Malibu Moon. Indy King the former Adena Springs resident has kept this stallion producing cross in the headlines through his smart son Pleasant Prince who ran second beaten a short head in the GR1 Florida Derby this season . Florida Derby winner and subsequent Kentucky Derby runner up Ice Box is by Pulpit.
A.P. Indy is acknowledged as the premier classic sire in the USA and has been accorded Chef de Race status in recognition of his influence over the past decade.
