Helmsman is the sire of horses that win at two years and train on and on. As a sire of 2 year olds Helmsman has proven himself capable of breeding stakes class horses and also a champion 2 year old.
From his very first crop Helmsman bred the Canadian Champion 2 year old and Sovereign Award winner Rare Friends. Rare Friends won four of his five starts at 2 years in Canada and was awarded the presigious Sovereign Award as Champion 2 year old colt. Rare Friends would go on to race through to eight years of age winning 12 times and accumulating US$775 511 by the time he retired. A gelding, Rare Friends was accorded the ultimate recognition when he was adopted upon his retirement by Windfields Farm, Canadas leading stud farm and home of his legendry grand sire Northern Dancer.
Helmsmans son Marions Man proved to be one of the most durable horses on the racing circuit in the USA. Marions Man raced from 2 years through to 10 years recording 20 wins and over US$ 450 000 in stakes earnings. A stakes performer Marions Mans finest moment came on his seasonal debut on January 15 2010 as a 10 year old making his 100th race day appearance. Marions Man rose to the occasion winning by an incredible 8 lengths ! Marions Man would compete in five races as a 10 year old winning four and bowing out in victorius fashion on his final start on June 27 at Penn National Race Track over one mile and seventy yards.
Durability is a common theme amongst the progeny of Helmsman as is precocity. Helmsman has consistently sired stakes class winners of both sexes at two years including Shipman champion Fort Erie Sprinter of 2006 as well as the good filly Wavy Lass who was stakes placed as a 2 year old and has gone on to win 9 races and over US$200 000 in stakes. His most successful daughter is Emerald Earrings a winner of 10 races and US$496 116 icliding the Monmouth West Branch Stakes (L) and also placed in the GR2 Molly Pitcher Handicap. Red At The Helm is a restricted stakes winner of 13 races and Pnutbutterandjolie runner up in the Kansas Oaks (L) is a winner of 11 races. Helmsman has produced Perfect Dear, Raise the Level,Crystal Dancer and Miss Lil fillies who placed in stakes races at 2 yrs and that trained on to become multiple race winners.
